Calls for Papers 2011

What a fantastic response to the Awesome Ladies booty call. You rock mightily yourselves, ladies!

So then. It's comparatively early days yet, but it's never too early to start hatching plots. So start thinking about any other presentations you might like to make. No commitment required now, but if you've got an idea you'd like to call dibs on, do it here, and avoid the rush. Also, if you have a suggestion you'd quite like someone else to take on (no guarantees) add that to the list too.

Basically there are a few categories here (no hard and fast rules):

1) Show Pimps -- is there an awesome new show (or a magnificent old one) that everyone should be watching? Let us know! Put together a few clips, or a basic primer (powerpoint, picspam etc) to advertise and convert the masses. [This includes media other than tv shows, natch.]

2) Ship Manifestos -- is there an OTP (or OT3 or...) that is oppressing fandom fairly leaping off the screen? Do likewise.

3) Panel Discussions -- everything you wanted to know and were afraid to ask. (You don't have to moderate, though you can if you'd like. Just chuck your questions down.)

Highlander -- China and I were talking about how odd it was no one's ever done such a classic fandom (for which several of you have worn the t-shirt to g/t!). Any old school fans want to cross this one off the list at last?

Re accommodation: [livejournal.com profile] dewey3067 has done a great job organising rooms at the Brentwood, which apparently are moving fairly fast, as predicted. The full details of the current group booking, including pricing etc, are in the last comment on that post, which will be edited to reflect current status. Go check it out, and confirm your details as appropriate. If you need to add yourself, please move quickly.

...I might do something for more sports RPS as well? I SWEAR I WILL ACTUALLY BE PREPARED THIS TIME.

Can someone do Suits? I have been hearing stuff but there's no way I'm bothering to pick up a new fandom between now and November, so ... If anyone out there is ~feeling it?

PS, also, this Marvel almost-a-virgin is super excited for the Avengers pimp!

If you need it (and no one else wants to pimp it), I'm happy to bring the h50 clip show I showed at sinpoz.

Whoo, Marvel comics! I am in love but wretchedly uneducated.

[identity profile] dewey3067.livejournal.com 2011-08-24 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Regarding Highlander - I have never actually seen any of it. My education is obviously sorely lacking!

If no one wants to do a pimp maybe we could at least have it as one of the lunchtime shows. (or has this been done before? if so - nevermind)

My football thing will (mostly) be a ship manifesto for my newly reunited OT3. Also contemplating a show pimp of sorts for Phoenix Wright, but still trying to work out how to pimp a Nintendo DS game. *g*

I have seen all of two eps of Highlander and some Methos heavy vids. I find it enables me to read the fanfic quite adequately. :-p

I'd be happy to pimp the 2000 show, The Invisible Man. It has slash potential, OT3 potential, and when it's good it's rather fun. (When it's bad it's painful, but that's tv for you.)

Also, would it be worthwhile discussing how the new downloading laws will affect people - will behaviours change, are people on a watch and see approach, etc. Not that I download, but I've certainly benefitted from those who do.

Good idea!

And yay to the I-Man pimp, too! Pru and I tried to watch it, enjoyed the start and gave up before the end of season 1 because it was just sooo bad. Does it get better again?

I vote for a lunchtime ep of Highlander as well as (if poss) a pimp. ETA: And seconding the vote for a Suits pimp.

I'm going to pimp Archer, because no one seems to have heard of it and it's awesome.

And I was thinking of running a discussion on rare pairings: the trials and advantages of shipping the non-obvious. Also, if there are any other vidders coming, I'd love a huddle about vidding.

We're still a couple of months out, right? What's the bet you (and several others) have a new fandom by early Nov? *g*

If I don't do Grant Morrison (as it were), I might talk just about the Killjoys universe. IDK. I'll keep pondering.

I'm keen to do something about the de-butching of staunch women on the tellies and the sad lack of eye-candy for me that results. But it'd be short, sweet and, of necessity, not cute enough *haz woe*

And I'm jumping on the Kalinda/Alicia bandwagon with large happily dancing boots.

I just want to make sure it'll be ok for me to come along to Get Together this year. I've pretty much retired from fandom and don't want to make anyone feel like they have an outsider in their midst cramping their style. Let me know! As much as it would be awesome to see you all and catch up, I'll understand if you think I should catch up with you all some other time.

Discussion topic idea - Social media

[identity profile] dewey3067.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
This got long, but basically maybe a discussion topic on Social Media and how it is evolving and the impact on us as fans? Or not. (I would not be heartbroken if you feel this has been done before or there is no time.) Possible subtopics:

Fracturing fandom? LJ,twitter, tumblr, facebook, google+, blogs ... Swirly thoughts about how fandom is evolving, from long lengthy discussions on email lists at a relatively few places to an explosion of information across all sorts of sites. Also – I used to feel like I knew most things that went on in my fandom but now with so many places I have a kind of background anxiety that I'll miss out on something! But different sites have different media – clips, art, audio that can be lots of fun... . (and how the hell does Tumblr work/ what is it good for?) So basically – where is everyone and what do they recommend?

RL and fan identity mindmeld? And how the diversity it makes it all more public/ harder to keep RL and fan-self separate online if twitter and facebook etc. logins can be used to comment everywhere and by anyone. Or does anyone want it to be separate? (maybe branching into Google+ and site name requirements – and My name is me (http://my.nameis.me/) and how our identity is what we define not what others define) Sort of what we've discussed before wrt "are you out with your fandom activities?" so you may not want to revisit it.

Interacting with TPTB on Twitter etc Also – I get the feeling that even more fans lately seem to have entitlement issues, maybe from having direct conversations with TPTB on twitter and blogs? Maybe from bring-back cancelled shows campaigns that seemed to work? Or book writer's blogs where they have back and forth discussions on character developement. Should fans have direct influence on the way a show/book evolves? Is it good to humanize TPTB or are we better off not looking behind the curtain at the Great and Wonderful Oz?

GENIUS IDEA (tm meelie)

[identity profile] alasen.livejournal.com 2011-09-12 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
After a discussion i just had with meelie, we would like to run an interactive discussion on the order of names in pairings (eg. charactera/characterb)

who decides the order of names in a pairing? why that order? is there a consensus? given various characters, everyone give us their examples of what the pairing names should be. DEATH MATCH!!!! meelie will make a fake fandom scenario and we can challenge the audience to blindly make up the the appropriate pairing to see if there is an overwhelming trend

Happy to do a Fringe pimp or a Hawaii Five-0, or both if need be. Fringe is the better show but a little light on slash, however H50's levels of slashy subtext are astronomical, and Alex O'Loughlin is very pretty, but plot can be sketchy.

... and I see there's another offer for H50. Anyway, happy either way. :)
