Calls for Papers 2011
What a fantastic response to the Awesome Ladies booty call. You rock mightily yourselves, ladies!
So then. It's comparatively early days yet, but it's never too early to start hatching plots. So start thinking about any other presentations you might like to make. No commitment required now, but if you've got an idea you'd like to call dibs on, do it here, and avoid the rush. Also, if you have a suggestion you'd quite like someone else to take on (no guarantees) add that to the list too.
Basically there are a few categories here (no hard and fast rules):
1) Show Pimps -- is there an awesome new show (or a magnificent old one) that everyone should be watching? Let us know! Put together a few clips, or a basic primer (powerpoint, picspam etc) to advertise and convert the masses. [This includes media other than tv shows, natch.]
2) Ship Manifestos -- is there an OTP (or OT3 or...) that isoppressing fandom fairly leaping off the screen? Do likewise.
3) Panel Discussions -- everything you wanted to know and were afraid to ask. (You don't have to moderate, though you can if you'd like. Just chuck your questions down.)

Highlander -- China and I were talking about how odd it was no one's ever done such a classic fandom (for which several of you have worn the t-shirt to g/t!). Any old school fans want to cross this one off the list at last?
Re accommodation:
dewey3067 has done a great job organising rooms at the Brentwood, which apparently are moving fairly fast, as predicted. The full details of the current group booking, including pricing etc, are in the last comment on that post, which will be edited to reflect current status. Go check it out, and confirm your details as appropriate. If you need to add yourself, please move quickly.

I do want to pick up some things in the DCnU! Like Static, and the Apollo/Midnighter thing! But yeah, I think I might have a wee Marvel holiday.

Marvel just seems *nicer*. Unless you're a Spiderman fan, in which case Quesada actively enjoys your tears, and trolls regularly to ensure your pain never diminishes.
But there's a wonderful quote, I think from Mark Gruenwald, about how at Marvel continuity is a tree, and it gets a healthy pruning fairly regularly. But at DC it's a highrise, and every now and then the whole thing gets demolished. Even when many of its tenants are still quite happy with their accommodations. D: D: D:

I'll think about it some more, but off the top of my head I'd say New Avengers (2005) was a good jumping on point. Tony and Steve get back together after being 'on a break' (as opposed to the Civil War divorce) and found a new team, which is pretty cool, though lacking some of the classic members. It'll then collide you into the whole Registration debacle, which was massively unpopular in some fandom quarters but highly successful saleswise, and which I personally really enjoyed.
It was actually where *I* started -- the maxi issue where Tony has a breakdown over Steve's corpse and all the remembrances was so moving I went back and read the whole event, and *that* was enough to make me go back and read everyone's back stories. There's about five different Avengers teams operating at the moment, none of which I can personally vouch for (too busy, not uninterested) though Avengers Prime is worth reading to see Tony and Steve reconcile again, and go on a bromance road trip with Thor and fight trolls and such. ;-p
Depending who your favourite characters are, you can then read their individual arcs -- Tony's battle with alcoholism, Steve re-finding Bucky (Winter Soldier was excellent) etc. You might also like Alias, a mini about Jessica Jones, a c-string hero who forges a new life as a journalist and marries Luke Cage.
X-Men, I'll have to do some more homework, but as far as isolated trades or novels go... God Loves, Man Kills (1982) is excellent -- it provided most of the inspiration for the second X-Men movie, and Magneto is a good guy (well, a bad guy fighting on Xavier's side against a worse foe, a trope I love).
There's also some cool stuff where Erik and Charles have post-war adventures in Israel, but I'd have to look that up.
[Too confusing? I'll make a required reading list for Nov.]
