Calls for Papers 2011

What a fantastic response to the Awesome Ladies booty call. You rock mightily yourselves, ladies!

So then. It's comparatively early days yet, but it's never too early to start hatching plots. So start thinking about any other presentations you might like to make. No commitment required now, but if you've got an idea you'd like to call dibs on, do it here, and avoid the rush. Also, if you have a suggestion you'd quite like someone else to take on (no guarantees) add that to the list too.

Basically there are a few categories here (no hard and fast rules):

1) Show Pimps -- is there an awesome new show (or a magnificent old one) that everyone should be watching? Let us know! Put together a few clips, or a basic primer (powerpoint, picspam etc) to advertise and convert the masses. [This includes media other than tv shows, natch.]

2) Ship Manifestos -- is there an OTP (or OT3 or...) that is oppressing fandom fairly leaping off the screen? Do likewise.

3) Panel Discussions -- everything you wanted to know and were afraid to ask. (You don't have to moderate, though you can if you'd like. Just chuck your questions down.)

Highlander -- China and I were talking about how odd it was no one's ever done such a classic fandom (for which several of you have worn the t-shirt to g/t!). Any old school fans want to cross this one off the list at last?

Re accommodation: [livejournal.com profile] dewey3067 has done a great job organising rooms at the Brentwood, which apparently are moving fairly fast, as predicted. The full details of the current group booking, including pricing etc, are in the last comment on that post, which will be edited to reflect current status. Go check it out, and confirm your details as appropriate. If you need to add yourself, please move quickly.

Discussion topic idea - Social media

This got long, but basically maybe a discussion topic on Social Media and how it is evolving and the impact on us as fans? Or not. (I would not be heartbroken if you feel this has been done before or there is no time.) Possible subtopics:

Fracturing fandom? LJ,twitter, tumblr, facebook, google+, blogs ... Swirly thoughts about how fandom is evolving, from long lengthy discussions on email lists at a relatively few places to an explosion of information across all sorts of sites. Also – I used to feel like I knew most things that went on in my fandom but now with so many places I have a kind of background anxiety that I'll miss out on something! But different sites have different media – clips, art, audio that can be lots of fun... . (and how the hell does Tumblr work/ what is it good for?) So basically – where is everyone and what do they recommend?

RL and fan identity mindmeld? And how the diversity it makes it all more public/ harder to keep RL and fan-self separate online if twitter and facebook etc. logins can be used to comment everywhere and by anyone. Or does anyone want it to be separate? (maybe branching into Google+ and site name requirements – and My name is me (http://my.nameis.me/) and how our identity is what we define not what others define) Sort of what we've discussed before wrt "are you out with your fandom activities?" so you may not want to revisit it.

Interacting with TPTB on Twitter etc Also – I get the feeling that even more fans lately seem to have entitlement issues, maybe from having direct conversations with TPTB on twitter and blogs? Maybe from bring-back cancelled shows campaigns that seemed to work? Or book writer's blogs where they have back and forth discussions on character developement. Should fans have direct influence on the way a show/book evolves? Is it good to humanize TPTB or are we better off not looking behind the curtain at the Great and Wonderful Oz?

Yup, that's where I was thinking, if anywhere. But only if there is interest and time.

Mostly I'm curious where folks hang out these days and if there is any change over how they are using the social media to interact.

I've been wondering that too, in a "Where is everyone? Come baaaaack!" kind of way.
