Call for papers

Greetings all.

We're in the final countdown now, so this is the place to make explicit and official your intentions vis a vis contributions at the con. If you have a witty title and tag line for the programme (LOL!) stick it in your comment here. If you're still a WIP, can you just give me an indication of what you *think* you'd like to do, so I can shove it on a theoretical timetable, and we can liaise about how long you'll need, what resources are required etc.

This includes: meta discussions you plan to lead/moderate; show pimps/intros; ship manifestos; the ol' slash pictionary; new games; ideas for discussion you *don't* want to lead/moderate but would like added to a general panel, etc. Any ideas you have, throw them on this pile please.

I will do a ship manifesto. "Roger and Rafa: so darling even the sports journalists ship them." Will let you know how much time I need soon. Once I know.

And a short little bit (i.e. 10 mins at most) on what canonical dorks My Chemical Romance are. "MCR: biggest fanboys ever"

I've done my Starsky and Hutch retrospective. It's fairly low tech (so my voice, lots) but does feature some vid material for the relief of the audience. It should take about ten minutes, fifteen at absolute most. Also, I can bring the DVDs if you want something for lunchtime watching etc.

Ideas for discussion I *don't* want to lead/moderate

1) serious business:

- the relationship between slash fandom and real-life queerness
- RPF and the fourth wall
- fanfic versus original fiction
- writing characters of a different race / orientation / gender / species to your own

2) fun and games:

- a verbal flashfic challenge: character X and character Y meet at a bar / on a bus / in the afterlife / at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

- a written flashfic game taught to me by the name 'Flapjack', which is like a written version of certain Whose Line is it Anyway? games. The rules: everyone starts writing a story in their fandom of choice, the moderator reads out a new and very random prompt every few minutes, and the writers have to incorporate each prompt into the story. Very odd stories result and are then read out to acclaim/incredulity/hilarity.

I want to do a brief intro (like, 15 min or less) to Make it or Break it. Chances of me thinking of a snappy title are fairly low, tbh, but I will let you know if I do.

[identity profile] shihadchick.livejournal.com 2010-09-14 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
I am going to do something pimp-like(say maybe half an hour? I doubt I can go over, my voice won't hold out, if nothing else) on the Like; I will comment back as and when I come up with a snappy title.

Also I know I have a note on the computer inside about discussion ideas; so consider me to have at least one to add to the orphaned discourses. Will come back adn comment once I boot it up and figure out what it WAS. (Sorry, least helpful!)

Instant Crossovers!

Basically, what [livejournal.com profile] deepbluemermaid said above, but I intend it to be played as:

- each person will write 4 names on scrap bits of paper
- we'll stick all the names in a hat and/or box and/or bowl. SOMETHING.
- individuals or a pair will draw 2 names out of the hat
- and they will tell the story of those 2 people meeting.

If they should happen to draw the same name twice, they will just have to tell the story of Jim Kirk meeting Jim Kirk or whatever.

(We should be able to fill an hour really easily with this.)

Not for 15 minutes of fame, but if people are interested I'll bring along my copy of Aye, Dark Overlord to play at lunchtime or something.

It is a story-telling game that uses cards as prompts in which you are minions of the Dark Overlord and you are making excuses about why you failed to do the task he/she/it set you. Pass the blame as much as possible.

My over-ambitious plan is currently Better off Ted: Phil and Lem - Their Love Is So Cancelled and Psych: Lassiter's Not Here. Um, at this point I'm aiming for about half an hour for Better off Ted and IDKohgod for Psych.

I have just this second finished my Better off Ted pimp and it's 41 minutes.

Uh. So that was only 26 episodes and my pairing weren't the main focus. How long do you think I can get for this Psych one before people want to hunt me down?

Should I list mine here? *g*

- Slash pictionary: stick figures of smut!
- White Collar pimp [insert clever subtitle here] -- 10-15 min
- Discussion: Writing OT3s or Hey, There's a Girl in my Slash o.O
- Discussion: When good slashers 'ship het (might be short, IDK)
- Attendee vidshow, assuming there are enough attendant vidders.

I think that's all.

[identity profile] shihadchick.livejournal.com 2010-09-14 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, awesome - the when slashers go het one was in my ideas list so now I don't have to suggest it. \team onebrain!/

Actually, assume 20 min for the White Collar pimp. I always underestimate. :-)

I seem to be all about canon queer characters this time around.

Glee: How Sue Sylvester is better than you I'll get back to you about a subtitle - 25 minutes for the video + a short intro on who's who in the large cast

Soaps are like totally gay - at the moment this is an under 15 min single pairing manifesto (because [livejournal.com profile] ariadne83 and I have recently been through deep fannish trauma and are in mourning *sob*), but if there's time, I'd like to expand it out to closer to 30 min to touch on some other shows (including why Europeans win at being gay on tv soaps).

ETA: I'm going to need 3 Norwegian trampolines and a turnip. Or barring that, some way of showing a video presentation (and possibly a powerpoint slide too).

And if there's time for the canon asexual character, let's talk about Sherlock ;)

And Sheldon, and Parker?

So I just mentioned an idea to [livejournal.com profile] china_shop, and she suggested that I post it here:

how about having the fangirl equivalent of a LAN party at get/together? Everyone brings their external hard drives / DVD-Rs, a few people bring laptops, and there's an orgy of fileswapping...

I have just bought a 1.5 TB hard drive, so I would like to get ALL THE SHOWS. And I have quite a lot to share, in terms of movies and TV (and fanvids, and music videos, and music...).

[identity profile] dewey3067.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
I offered last year to burn disks ahead of time and will offer to do so again. I'm just disorganized this year! I found it more relaxing to not have to be copying stuff while the events went on. Plus there was a real shortage of power outlets so things got problematic. But some people did bring hard drives and I will also do so.

If you check out my list from last year, (http://community.livejournal.com/get__together/51296.html) all of that is still on offer and I've got more.

Probably I will start a media post on Sunday and people are welcome to add to it. Tomorrow I am going to be busy - see my entry today to see why. (http://dewey3067.livejournal.com/7052.html#cutid1) *g*
