Not saying suffering is good (suffering leads to the dark side!) but I personally don't feel particularly compelled to read fic for relationships I already feel satisfied by. And I'm officially a curmudgeon now, so I certainly don't want to read fic for canon relationships I don't feel satisfied by, I probably already abandoned the show.

Hm. Necessary. Reading fic is like breathing. I don’t really seriously have any western canons with actual gay, though; I feel like the delicate homoerotic subtext of Hugo and (arguably) Tolkien do more than the old school media fandoms, but much less than the current canon gay canons. I like that half-twilight, that soft grey that could also be pink.

I think it’s similar for the untamed: the show leaves enough unsaid and undone that the ground is fertile for fiction. SVSSS is a rare flower, but so many things are unresolved and the whole concept is so delightful that I have imaginative space for reading fic. I DON’T really read any TGCF, though, and I think that’s because it’s mxtx’s most fully imagined and worked-out m/m romance. I don’t need more.

Puriteens... There’s a crop of earnest young twenty somethings in Tolkien and they are sweet, but the things they want and write ring no bells in me, and if I worried about audience reception, they would potentially chill some of mine when writing. But I do not.

Also preaching to the choir but add a side of words mean things and random ppl need to learn what isn't actually queerbaiting ffs! ...also tbh on an rpf front queer rep from cis men remains borderline nonexistent but I have so many delightful lesbians and bi women to enjoy in cricket and that fucking rules.

TOO MANY PURITEENS. THEY ARE SO BORING. I'm finding better and more queer rep (and fannish energy, not quite the same thing) in books scratches some of my fic itch. I'm also often less fannishly interested in canon queer couples even if I like them, because part of what I enjoy is being Conspiracy String Board Guy about subtext. (That's what's fun about fire trucks - actual queer rep! PLUS two dudes being subtextually weird about each other as in days of yore.)

Fic is always necessary! It's never been something that I look for to fix the canon, more to fill in missing details or going down an alternative trouser leg of time. Sometimes I think "better" (but more boring) canon rep is a a fic fandom killer (for me at least) because I almost never enjoy reading about happily committed couples - there needs to be something missing, either a get together or something else. I think this is one reason why the Wangxian has been so popular in transformative fandom, because it straddles the line of canon but also not, with an open ending.

there are way too many puriteens around, and I don't know if it's a Gen Z specific problem or just american cultural imperialism manifesting puritanism/evangelical beliefs in a woke hat

A lot of the time what makes me want fic isn't that my pairing don't get together in canon. (In fact I mostly ship non-canon pairings.) Fic is necessary to me because there's something about canon that I want more of, or I want to fix, or to explore, or to see a different angle on. That's usually a plot thing. Sometimes it's a relationship thing but it's very seldom a ship thing.

I agree with the comments others have made about The Untamed being a good mid-point in terms of providing a satisfying arc but also leaving a lot of room for imagination and work.

Lastly, in terms of queer representation, it's still overwhelmingly rare in major genre media properties (in the West or anywhere else) to center a queer couple. So for people like me who like to slash the main character, we'll have lots of room to play for a while yet.

Edit: came back to add my thoughts on the puritanism thing. My experience with this in recent times has unfortunately not been confined to young people who don't know better - if I had to generalise I'd say it's people who are newer to fandom and for some reason have brought a 50s mindset to relationships with them, heteronormativity, fetishizing virginity and all.

I'm interested in particular dynamics I guess, and I'm not tied to the how do they get together trope? If I get those dynamics in canon queer relationships then fic is good regardless. (Except in the case of Magnus Archives, where I was pretty alienated from the fandom zeitgeist, in part because the fandom did skew young.)

My lazy answer is...it depends. There are queer characters/relationships I enjoy and won't necessarily seek out fic, but I've spent the last year (!!) in Shadowhunters fandom reading fic for a canon queer pairing. Enjoyed a lot of close to canon AUs and stories expanding on what we did get on-screen. Fortunately the 400 year age gap possibly drove away the worst of the puriteens. But I still love a good old-fashioned subtextual pairing (hello Bucky and Eddie).

I have an idea for something I would like us to discuss and I would like to run the discussion myself: Silly little Fanfic Out of the Closet topic that I have, about how public profile of fanfic has changed in the last 25 years (ie in my experience since I got online and found it).

I have never been SUPER drawn to canonical queer pairings fannishly (Black Sails being the exception), but my fannish journey the last two years has been quite different as I've been solely in Chinese and Korean fandoms and the very Westernised notion of Queerbaiting isn't relevant (or shouldn't be, but god help me the puritans will come yelling it anyway)- the shows that I have gravitated towards have had what is essentially a canon queer pairing, but not explicitly stated as such and so fic (and vids) are very much wanted - my current show has an extremely tragic ending and while I am never a big proponent of "fixit" fic, I find myself craving something like it in this fandom- what-if scenarios without lowered stakes, missing scenes etc etc

I have an idea for something I would like us to discuss and I would like to run the discussion myself: I hadn't thought of anything but if anyone is keen to take up vidding, I could run a very quick 101 workshop thingy? IDK if that's something that anyone would be into or not, but if so, happy to do this. Would also happily lead a discussion on the state of fandom vidding practices if that's something folks would be into.

How does better (arguably) queer rep in canon affect your relationship with fandom? Fic still necessary? Just fun now? Still better thought out than lazy shoehorning? Worse than ever? Too many puriteens? Sound off here:

Queer rep is great and important but it’s defined very narrowly these days. If the only valid queer rep states their queerness explicitly and kisses their queer partner on screen, where does that leave the whole universe of everything else we have to work with? If your show can’t show the kiss because of the country it comes from, is that less valid? It might be wildly progressive for its context but get completely dismissed or called queerbaiting or a bromance (yells about MCTNA) because no one stands up and declares they’re gay and in love.

Side note, queerbaiting is not what people think it is! It is a marketing situation where they hint at (or straight up say there is) queerness to bring in the audience then don’t deliver. It isn’t “my OTP have wild chemistry but didn’t get together”, that’s a difference between the creative team and the audience - queerbaiting is the actual bait-and-switch/lie told to bolster the audience. It’s actually really rare! It happens but nowhere near as much as the wider internet thinks it does.

Anyway I think my answer to the question is that I don’t engage with wider fandom because I like my fandom experience to come from people I already know and trust.

I have spent all this year reading fic about a canon queer pairing, but then whether a ship is canon or not often has little bearing on whether I search out fic for it or not, it just has to grab me in someway, or leave me wanting more. There are still canons where I am perfectly happy with what is put on screen/page and have no desire to search out fic for (Good Omens for example) or ones where the screen/page is good but I want more/better (Shadowhunters). Better(?) queer rep hasn't changed my relationship with fic - I'll still hunt it out - and there is still some things it just does better than canon.

But yeah there too many puriteens, but I mostly just see them in the tweets, not in my direct fandoms content rn (but uh lol I am sure there are heaps in KPop fandom so yep).
