Who's sick of listening to me moan? Yes? You? Cool, me too.
Today, however, I am filled with a whole new joy and optimism. What brought this on, you ask? Well for one thing, I called Geeks on Wheels (no, seriously, 0800 4 A GEEK, www.geeksonwheels.co.nz) and they have fixed my network and all my computers, and for the paltry sum of $200 I am sitting here surrounded by Teh Intrawebs. Seriously, I am bathed in the warm embrace. Both my desktops and my laptop and M's laptop are humming around me, and it is paradise. It is the closest thing possible to being McKay in Tao of Rodney.
Ahem.
*gets over indecorous squirming*
No, no, one more barb. I have also kicked Telecom to the curb. Goodbye you sanctimonious thieving wankers. Hello Telstra Clear my very best new friend. How you doin'?
Right. To the point.
My fandom renaissance starts today.
That means vigorous posting in my own lj... and also that it's time to get the ball rolling on g/t 2007.
As a hostess who always feels crushed and exhausted and ready to beg for death by the end (only to want to call you all back as soon as the door closes behind the last of you) I must applaud my own brilliance last year in shifting it into the holidays. Not having to mark 75 exam papers during the whole thing made my will to live slightly stronger. So. Same holidays this year then, since it seemed to suit most. And I'm told the 29-30th September is a long weekend in NSW, so I call shenanigans on the whole thing and nominate those dates. I swear I won't get roped into an IT conference this time.
So... I know it's very early in the year, but I thought I'd mention it anyway, in my newfound spirit of joy. All the polls and nonsense will come later of course. But start examining your finances, and your leave, and...
And you know what? Please start thinking about your fifteen minutes of fame, which I am reinstituting. I missed it last year. I'm going to crack my whip (it matches my cowboy boots I bought in Arizona) and be a little bossy about formats and timetables this year. But it will be to the good, I swear. You will be glad. You will. Or else. No seriously. Spirit of joy.
*squee*

Date: 2007-02-23 10:26 pm (UTC)Oh, and hey, I booked my tickets. 12th to 19th of April. Turns out I have a dentist's appointment the 11th. Good old M, if she didn't take care of these things I certainly wouldn't...
But can you see my new mood??? Joy I tell you. I daresay it's still nowhere near your connection, but wow. 1000x better than we've ever had. And all the computers are properly networked...

Date: 2007-02-24 12:09 am (UTC)No seriously, I'm clearly going to have to wear them that weekend.
FMOF is a policy I ran the first year where (almost) everyone had to take ten or fifteen minutes to make a presentation about their fandom. You could opt out if someone was covering yours already and you were happy to just squee. It's a way of giving quieter fen a guaranteed moment, ensuring everyone at least recognises every fandom, and making sure the most popular fandoms don't carry all before them. Plus also informative! I learnt a lot from
I always worry about whether "the quiet ones" are just lapping up the goodness, or secretly feeling resentful. Plus also it's easy for the fandom du jour (which isn't always the one you expect - I was very surprised at how Smallville clawed its way back against Atlantis last year, for example) to hog the limelight.
Plus I love [powerpoint, and any excuse for a slideshow is a good one in my book. I have templates and all. ;-p

And, ohh, gotcha. Good to know, and yes- hearing about other people's squee and enthusiasms is always good.
*nod* I hear you, yes. And, hrm, good point.
Powerpoint: good clean fun! Well. Mostly. *grin*

Date: 2007-02-24 12:33 am (UTC)You're making me want to corrupt Powerpoint! Stop it! *g*
"Hey," said Fandom, deceptively casual, leaning against the doorway of Powerpoint's office. "Do you have a minute? Think you could help me out with something?"
Powerpoint looked up from its monthly sales figures slides and smiled wholesomely. "Sure. What do you need?"
Fandom cracked its neck and smiled, showing its teeth. "It's not a big deal -- I was just wondering if you could help me with a little porny exposition."
"Ah." Powerpoint's cheeks went red and it looked away, nervously. "Um, I-I-I don't know. I-- Maybe you should ask s-someone with more experience? I mean, I've n-never--" It stuttered to a halt.
Fandom took a step closer, noting the sheen of sweat on Powerpoint's upper lip. "Never?" it asked, softly.
