Hey, you guys! Just a quick survey in case any of you are harbouring genius ideas we can take advantage of for next time, or had issues we weren't aware of. Please take a couple of minutes to fill it out. We want to know what you think!

At this year's get/together:

1. What 3 (or more) things worked best?
2. What 3 (or more) things would you change?

The main venue itself:

Park Bowling Club Kilbirnie
598-600 Evans Bay Parade

The Evans Bay Parade address is its official one, and those driving (depending where you're coming from) may prefer to come down that way. For myself I've always thought it was on Kilbirnie Crescent, and certainly that's where the bus will drop public transport takers. I can't get a number, obviously, but it's between the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre (no 63) and the Ruth Gottlieb Library (no 101).

There's a fair amount of parking there at the park for drivers.

Walk in through the main front doors, but then instead of walking through into the bar, which will presumably be full of old folks in their bowling gear, hang left and go upstairs. Ideally there will be some sort of sign, *g*.

Assuming the absence of epic fail, this is how to get to the venue.  )

Restaurants:

Friday Night Fangirls know where to go, all others:  )

Saturday and Sunday we should all be heading down together, but for safety's sake:

Siam Thai 64 Kilbirnie Crescent
Tandoori Heritage 23 Onepu Road

I'm assuming everyone will come Saturday, how many should I try to book for Sunday???

... ooh, alliteration. :-D

Howdy one and all.

Here follows the basic timetable for this year's g/t. It's pretty full, which means we're going to actually have to make more effort to *follow* it than we have in past years...

So on that note, I want to make a couple of comments. This year's g/t is our biggest yet, with twenty-seven registered participants. That's fantastic, and I'm really excited about it, but it does make logistics slightly more difficult. We're in the middle ground between a slumber party (and believe me, I miss SLM more than anyone) and a con. China and I work incredibly hard to make this happen, and I for one have spent hours on this timetable. Above all what we need is co-operation and compromise.

We are, always have been, and always shall be, pan-fandom. Kink meme rules apply, ie no judging other people's kinks. You can't hit BACK, unfortunately, but you can go for a walk, or retreat to the readers' corner, or go make yourself a cup of tea. That said:

We do have some biases, and always have had, eg:

The Tyranny of Those with Loud Voices

Self explanatory. We'll do the very best we can to mod the panels appropriately so that everyone can be heard. With regard to presentations, though, the simple fact is: those who volunteer get to do them. The only known cure is to volunteer yourself!

The Fandom that Ate Fandom

Just as lj is occasionally overrun by orcs from a fandom you cannot see the attraction in, so too g/t is sometimes swamped by a fandom du jour. Often not anyone's primary fandom, but everyone's secondary, kinda like STV voting. Wai halo thar, Doctor Who 2008. I think we've got this one licked this year, because our spread is massive.

Shiny and New Trumps Cherished and Old aka Sluts have More Fun than the Faithful

Pretty self explanatory. Pimps and presentations are 9/10 times for new obsessions, and if you can juggle five fandoms at once you'll obviously be readier to squee than the monogamous. We've taken active steps to counter this, at least in small part, this year, and we'll be screening an episode each day from the glorious old skool.

Lastly, we do have the Obligatory Squick Warnings (taken from your registration forms):

Incest is/is not Best

Some love it, some hate it. End of Story. No one's pimping it, and no one gets to criticise it. Obviously you can exercise your free will and your freedom of speech anywhere you like, and I would actively anticipate some conversations, and willingly participate in them. They won't be on the main floor though (except possibly during the Kink Meme panel, for which there will be warnings as appropriate). My Supernatural reel is for the show, not the pairing.

Real People can Dislike Real Person Fic

Good old Spn, where RPF is the morally preferable choice, *g*. Still, the fact is, RPF remains a squick for many people, including people registered for g/t. It gets a slot this year because it's very popular, and some elements of democracy apply. What I've done, and I hope you'll agree, is seek the greatest possible happiness for the greatest number of people. To that end, the RPF presentations are scheduled against lunchbreaks, and additional lunchbreaks against the ep watches. Those who wish to can thus absent themselves while the RPF crowd have the main floor. In neither case is there an obligation to vanish for your break -- you can grab food and come straight back and see everything if you want! The point is to have choice.

Without further ado then:

I am (with the help of a couple of wonderful people) slowing getting myself into gear wrt the vidshow. Please email me suggestions (preferably with links)/requests/advice/encouragement at deafhalfwolf@gmail ASAP. Muchas gracias, amigas!
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Thanks to the increased numbers this year (which of course subsidises/reduces venue hire effectively), I am very pleased to announce that g/t has remained recession-proof. Subs are still the glorious price of twenty dollars only, which covers the venue, some goodie bags (ha ha, which will be a surprise to you all this year, but lol) and snacks and drinks for the weekend.

Because we are looking at bigger numbers, and because I have to pay for the venue in advance, and because China and I are not recession-proof, I will require payment in advance this year, rather than on the day. There are two options, either a) Paypal (which brings us full circle since I opened that account to pay China's and my subs to Sinpoz in the action that kickstarted this crazy whirligig of fun); or b) Direct Credit. My paypal account is, as always, arysteia@yahoo.com. If you need bank account details (not my mortgage account, so don't plan a quick getaway to Brazil) comment here and I will email you. If you could get on that asap please. Thank you, also in advance.

Some housekeeping still outstanding:

We're still missing some arrival times. Can you please comment at the arrivals post. ETA: all done now.

I assume everyone has organised their accommodation by now. If not, I refer you back to the accommodation post. My schoolmarmly listmaking compulsion would like to be able to leave messages etc if necessary, and/or make tentative car pooling arrangements. ETA: all done now.

I think that's it from me for now, but I will be spamming you a bit over the next few days. So sorry. ;-p
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Howdy, one and all.

The weekend is nigh upon us, and it's filling up nicely as far as content goes. We also have our largest ever numbers in terms of participants, so yaye.

China and I will be putting together the timetable very shortly, and there's not a huge amount of space left, but:

1) Does anyone (who hasn't already communicated with me in some way) still want to make a presentation of some kind? By presentation here I mean "fandom/pairing intro", ie "here's my thing that I adore and you should too"; or alternately "show pimp", ie "here's a show you should totally be watching/rewatching"? If so, we could squeeze another couple in.

If anyone's mad keen on any of the newer shows and wants to gain more fans, now's your chance. Leverage? Fringe? IDEK. Or if you're a last bastion of an old show and want to rekindle the embers, still your chance! China and I were chuckling about the fact that SGA, aka the fandom that ate fandom, never got done at g/t. Travesty! Victim of its own popularity! She's also asked me to rectify Supernatural's nigh supernatural absence, and I will be (show, not ship, fear not anti-wincesters). If anyone wants to put together a "reel", ie the very best moments of your show, cut together so they'll play short and sweet... have at.

In either case, please let me know in comments.

2) And then there's panels. We've got a few goodies planned, but for various reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, China and I don't want to listen to the sound of our own voices continually. So, I have a request in three subsets.

2a) You'd like a panel of your own (ie you have a topic, some subquestions, and would be happy to mod/stimulate the discussion)
2b) You have a burning question but just want to throw it out there (ie tell me and I will add it to one of the pre-existing lists)
2c) You would like to volunteer to mod something off the list (ie just guide the convo, topic already on the list)

If any of these sound like you, please let me know in comments.

The (tentative) timetable follows fairly shortly...

Registration Form 2009

Preferred first name: Katrina

Reader/Writer/Vidder/All of the Above: Reader

My primary fandom: I'm a fandom whore - I'm not even a serial monogamist. I've mostly been reading bandslash and Merlin lately, I guess.

My secondary fandom(s): Stuff I have read as primary fandoms in the past and skim now or read what I can find: Saiyuki, Smallville, Star Trek, Supernatural, Supernatural RPS, Bujold, Die Hard 4, Pirates of the Caribbean, Devil Wears Prada, Petshop of Horrors, Harry Potter, Gordan Korman, NCIS, due South, Sentinel, Highlander, Rurouni Kenshin, Ironman, BtVS, Stargate 1, Stargate: Atlantis, Lord of the Rings (Simarillion).

I tend to fail at canon for TV and movies, books not so much. Rec it well enough and I may end up trolling FFnet for something else. The fandom matters less than the story.

OTP forever: ...seriously?

OTP sometimes: Arthur/Merlin, Frank/Gerard, Pete/Patrick, Sanzo/Goku, Hakkai/Gojyo, Kirk/Spock, Dean/Sam... Will happily read OT3 or OT4 at least once. I tend to read a lot of one pairing in a fandom first and then try others. Sometimes I just read whatever. It depends how the characters work. I'll read anything at least once. If I like it, I'll look for more.

My definition of slash is:stories about a fictional relationship between two (or occasionally more) characters of the same sex, written by fans and readily found on the internet.

I like slash because: It's pretty awesome and some of it is pretty damn hot. It can be everything that published fiction can be and more, plus it's free and easily available. I read fast and read a lot, so a constantly renewing source of fiction is a really really good thing. Replaced my Mills&Boon reading habit with something a lot cheaper.

I discovered slash by: [livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose making me read Mercedes Lackey fic and then Harry Potter at FFNet. Some of those author wrote Gundam Wing, I was distracted, I never looked back. It's all her fault.

My bullet proof kink: None of them are bullet proof because it all depends on the writing and the characters, but mild bondage, great dialogue, awesome character interaction, and soul bonds. People loving math.

My major league squick: humiliation, embarrassment, dubcon

My guilty pleasure: crossovers

I first found out about (my first) g/t from/by: [livejournal.com profile] arysteia at a fandom dinner thing

Coke/Coke Zero/Sprite/Juice: Juice

Tea/Coffee: Tea, coffee if it's not expresso and its either first thing in the morning or I'm really tired

Indian/Thai/Italian: Sounds good

I would like 15 Minutes of Fame: No

I will use it to: Can we talk about how slash is becoming increasingly mainstream and how fic writers are now building a fan base as published authors starting from a fandom base and how this can possibly change the writer/fanbase interaction instead without me having to stand up anywhere and talk because that would be more interesting.
[identity profile] missiedith.livejournal.com
Registration Form 2009

Preferred first name: Jasmine. Will also respond to 'Missie' and 'Hey you'.

Reader/Writer/Vidder/All of the Above: Reader, and once upon a time a writer.

My primary fandom: Err, not very good at sticking to just one. Last month or so it's been Torchwood.

My secondary fandom(s): SG1, SGA, BtVS, Firefly, LotR, Lotrips, Harry Potter, Supernatural, Due South, House, Veronica Mars, DC comics, Pride & Prejudice, History Boys, and far too many others to even bother noting

OTP forever: I have none. I will head straight for the rare pairings page of a site every time.

OTP sometimes: Nope, still nothing.

My definition of slash is: same-sex text or subtext in either canon, fanwork, or discussion

I like slash because: it makes writers push the boundaries of what is believable in a canon. also, it has fewer mary-sues.

I discovered slash by: someone online trying to embarass me while I was on a school computer in a library.

My bullet proof kink: genderbending, bodyswapping, thoughtfully written bdsm

My major league squick: torture/rape/gender stereotyping/character bashing used as a plot device

My guilty pleasure: crossovers, obscure characters, backstory, and Torchwood.

I first found out about (my first) g/t from/by: [livejournal.com profile] china_shop!

Coke/Coke Zero/Sprite/Juice: Juice.

Tea/Coffee: Hot chocolate.

Indian/Thai/Italian: Italian, but I quite like the other two as well.

I would like 15 Minutes of Fame: Yes.

I will use it to: Travel back in time to work out what on earth I could possibly use 15 minutes of fame for. So that's a no, then, but I look forward to watching everyone else's. I did live in Cardiff for 5 years, though, so if anyone wants to know what really happens when you order pizza under the name Torchwood I may be able to help.

My primary fandom: I'm so polyfannish it's not funny at the moment. Fandoms close to my heart though are due South, SGA, SPN, Generation Kill, Sports Night

My secondary fandom(s): Star Trek (reboot), Kings, Southland. I'm also going through an The OC reconnaisance

OTP forever: rayk/fraser, mckay/sheppard, J2 Dean/Castiel, Brad/Nate, Casey/Danny - really pretty much each fandom has an OTP.

OTP sometimes: hard call, really. I rarely stray from my OTP

My definition of slash is: 2 people of the same gender ... you know *winks*

I like slash because: because hot guy, yum. 2 hot guys together...YUMMO

discovered slash by: trying to findout what happened in an episode of The West Wing and ooooh, what's this...and then my eyes were opened.

My bullet proof kink: when the guys are affectionate with other without being OOC. Hands.

My major league squick: humiliation.

My guilty pleasure: H/C, angst, "for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture", domestic fic, long...

I first found out about (my first) g/t from/by: Wow. It's like I've always known.

Coke/Coke Zero/Sprite/Juice: all of the above and water...lots of water.

Tea/Coffee: Do not come between me and my coffee in the morning. It's dangerous.

Indian/Thai/Italian: Yum

I would like 15 Minutes of Fame: I prefer to be behind the scenes.

Please comment to this post with when you will be arriving in Wellington. Be clear about which day you get in, and what time. Not because I'm Big Brother, but so we can organise transport, facilitate entertainment/liaison for those here on Friday, dinner for those in the mood etc, before we have our grand opening Saturday morning.

I'll be updating this post as info comes in, so let me know if anything changes too, please.

Awesome.

I like slash because: I came for the boys kissing boys and girls kissing girls, stayed for the community.

I discovered slash by: the first time, looking for Star Wars fanfic on fanfiction.net. The second time, because [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick made me.

My bullet proof kink: fluffy fluff, awkwardness, genderfuck in all its definitions (though nothing is truly bulletproof if it's written poorly enough).

My definition of slash is: THEIRLOVEISSOGAY! SMOOOOSHCAKES!!!

I like slash because: To generalise wildly, men are sexually easy and emotionally difficult. Also teh hot.

I discovered slash by: Reading [livejournal.com profile] eliade's BtVS fic -- first Spuffy, then Spander. At the time (2002) I said, "I just have to accept that I'm not a slash-fan: I try, but it doesn't do it for me the way its, uh, extreme level of detail suggests that it should." Ha!

My bullet proof kink: Equality and genuine like. Humour, esp private jokes.

My major league squick: Power imbalance. Dub- and non-con for any value of dub or non. OOC kinkfic.

My guilty pleasure: Writing RPS. I still have qualms about it, but I can't help myself.

Depends how soon I get my new machine. But I'll definitely do something, possibly with old skool paper handouts.

I will use it to: At the very least, run a discussion about what we want from canon, and probably also something about writing (any suggestions?). Also, slash pictionary!!! \o/

Righty-ho then. I'll keep stalling with g/t bzns.

Options for accommodation are pretty much as follows:

Hostels

X-Base

Nomads

I don't think there's much doubt these are the two nicest hostels in the downtown area. They're certainly the newest. I've never stayed at either, but I've scoped both out (China and I trawled the entire town last year) and my impression is that Nomads is quieter. I've also heard anecdotally that it's slightly nicer. You can get a quad or a sixer for about $30 per person per night at both. Both are equally close to the bus stop, and it's a fifteen minute ride to Kilbirnie.

Sethra has already assembled a party, so if you're in that group, please finalise with her at her post back here.

Motels

747

Will do triples for about $40 pp. Might be worth checking out. The advantage would be that you'd be just across the road. Otoh, it's small, so might be full during the hols.

Any questions, please ask.

Final List:

The Wellington Eight get to sleep in their own beds
The X-Base Six (Carol, Mab, Elaine, Pru, Dewey and Jasmine) are in the Sanctuary at Base
The Sydney Four (Al, Meelie, Sin and Libby) are putting us all to shame at the Museum Hotel
The Ls (Linda, Lee and Lyn) are at the Pixie Palace
The Canadiadians (Claire and Kat) are at the 747
