First up, as most of you will have gleaned by now, the proposed dates have been confirmed, as is the venue. We will be at the hall Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd October (though with some minor changes that I'll detail soon) and having the usual peripheral brunches, lazy afternoons, etc on both Friday 30th September and Monday 3rd October as applicable to individual attendees' schedules.

Get your thinking caps on about presentations, games, discussions, etc etc, that you might like to have/host/moderate. We've had our first unoffical volunteer already, which was [livejournal.com profile] labellementeuse with Critical Role, so kudos, T. Pub Quiz is a go, so start swotting up your Fanlore, g/t history, and AO3 stats.

We're still on twitter, obviously: https://twitter.com/get__together, but in a new twist on an old concept we also now have a comm at Imzy: https://www.imzy.com/get_together. All posts (or at the very least links) will be made at all three places, so follow whichever you prefer.

If you have friends who won't see this post, please send them a carrier pigeon!

Ooh, one last point. I'm currently holding a booking at a hostel as a last resort backup in the event of difficulty, but will cancel it if everyone is sorted. Let me know as soon as you can on that one, please.
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
I know there was some vague disgruntlement with the Brentwood last year, and venue wise we're still based in Seatoun, so it may be just as easy (but cheaper) to stay at a hostel in town rather than the hotel in Kilbirnie. I won't repost all the info, but if you look back through the accommodation tag most of it's been discussed there at some point.

Feel free to use the comments to this post to look for room mates/discuss available options.

I know Team Auckland A, ie the Extended House of Trolling, had success with renting a house last year, so it may be worth talking to them if a few of you would like to go in together on an option like that. [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick, would you consider making a comment here about your experiences and any recommendations?

Team Australia A is staying with me at the Pixie Palace, and I think [livejournal.com profile] jamethiel_bane is venturing out to the Shire. [livejournal.com profile] the_antichris are you at your sister's?
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Right, two things here:

1) Can you please give me an indication of arrival day/time here. No need to be NSA-levels of specific, just a general idea so I can get a sense of who's around for brunches etc. If you're coming in a group one of you can speak for all. ;-p

2) A round of applause please, for [livejournal.com profile] dewey3067, our masterful accommodation co-ordinator.

From Dewey:

"For group accommodation I have reserved rooms in the Brentwood Hotel in Kilbirnie.

Room: 4 x Quad rooms (can be split into 4 x single beds per room)
Tariff: $155.00 per room/night -- rate covers 2 people, then $35.00 per person thereafter.

(Which is better than in previous years as for those rooms without four people we get a lower price.)

In the past we’ve either split the total per night evenly between all people regardless of rooms, or a group handles all charges for a single room for the weekend. I’m good either way and we can decide on the weekend.

The Brentwood has a free airport shuttle: 'For a pick up please call us on 0508 273 689 once you have collected your luggage and we will pick you up outside the Arrivals Terminal (downstairs). Drop offs can be arranged with Reception.'

I’d like to know by Sunday 21 September if you want a space, as I will cancel unneeded rooms so as to not get charged!

For those not wanting in on this hotel booking, I can recommend the YHA in the city. But you will need to book soon as it is Wearable Arts weekend."

It occurs to me belatedly that I really should have announced this here. Sorry about that. It's been so long since posting to lj was second nature, and that does make me sad. D:D:D:

As mentioned at various times and in various places, the confirmed dates for get/together 2013 are the weekend of the 5th and 6th October, with festivities commencing on Friday 4th, and farewells Monday 7th if you're around.

If you have a twitter account, then make sure you follow @get__together, as that does tend to be where I make announcements in the heat of the moment. If not, I promise all future updates will arrive here in a more timely fashion.

Start thinking about presentations you might like to make, questions you'd like to submit for discussion, and just generally getting in the mood. It's only nine weeks away!

ETA: check comment thread from Dewey to call early dibs on accommodation if you need it.
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Hi everyone.

I was waiting for Dewey to make this post, but in the meantime I've noticed a fair amount of double-up chatter in other places, so apologies for stepping on your toes, hon.

Dewey, who is the hotel goddess, has unfortunately confirmed that the Brentwood Hotel and 747 Motel in Kilbirnie are both full for the weekend of get/together. God knows what's going on. I understand she's been looking into other options, so can everyone who's coming in from elsewhere in NZ (Aussies not included) please track comments to this post and either confirm you've made your own arrangements, or liaise with potential roommates here. I'll keep editing in updates as they arrive, but the comment threads will have the most up to date information in the first instance.

ETA 2.0: This post is now closed. No further additions to the group booking are available. If you need advice as to accommodation options in Wellington feel free to ask, but you will have to make your own bookings from here on out. Thanks again to Dewey for a masterful job on a task that was even more difficult than usual.

Accommodation

For those of you that have arranged accommodation with Dewey, the hotel is the Brentwood in Kilbirnie. There is supposed to be a free airport shuttle. Their website says "For a pick up please call us on 0508 273 689 once you have collected your luggage and we will pick you up outside the Arrivals Terminal (downstairs). Drop offs can be arranged with Reception." Dewey will check-in around 1:30 on Friday (Air NZ co-operating). Please let her know in comments or by email what time you expect to arrive so that she can make sure you can get into the rooms. Cell number: 027 482 2010 if any problems on the day.

Friday

I'm having a hell of a day at work, but will be able to get away for lunch. If anyone who's interested can indicate it in comments, I'd probably lean towards Elements, also in Kilbirnie, so easy for you, and I can get there and back to work in the appropriate time. Kickoff from around 12.30-40. My cell: 027 242 5384.

A perennial bugbear, it remains a regret we don't have an all-in-one space like the [livejournal.com profile] sinpozium venue in Sydney, but we do what we can.

Hotel Option:

If you move quickly, and you're willing/able to splash out a little more this year, I heartily recommend the Brentwood. (I've never actually stayed there, before anyone makes me sign in blood, but I have been to functions and enjoyed them.) Do twins and triples, but in each case you can pack in an extra person (ie triple and quad) if two of you are willing to share a queen bed. About $50-80 pp depending on combos and packing. Big advantage: literally across the road and down a wee lane from the venue. Also, free pick-up from airport, so save on taxis.

The Brentwood

Otherwise, there are the old reliables offered every year: )

Feel free to use the comments on this post to discuss options/organise roommates. And of course to ask any accommodation related questions. :D

ETA: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dewey3067 for organising and booking the hotel rooms. Check out full details in comments.
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
We will be at the same location as last year, Park Bowling Club in Kilbirnie. It's spacious, central, and the neighbours are cheerful and tolerant. We've got a list of a few niggles from last year (heating, electrical sockets, boot heels, etc) so I'll be making a housekeeping post about that sort of thing later on.

We'll likely eat at the same (or similar) restaurants too -- there are others further afield, but I'm assuming those without cars would prefer not to have to make multiple journeys back and forth.

With regard to accommodation, I know there were a couple of requests from last year to look into a group booking somewhere, and China and I did investigate the Brentwood, which would have been my first choice, but unfortunately they're all booked up for a conference. More surprisingly, so is the old faithful 747. Failing either of those, there's always X-Base and Nomads, both of which have housed g/ters reasonably happily in the past, and both of which are on the direct bus route, both from the airport and to/from the venue. Please feel free to put together a party in the comments to this post as needed.
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
This icon brought to you by the letters W, T, and F, and the realisation I have to write 15,000 words of ST:XI by next Monday and I have not only 0 words, but also 0 plot. This icon's ass now kicked by my awesome and fearful power of writing five thou words a day when under the gun, and China and Mr China's promptings over dinner.

Righty-ho then. I'll keep stalling with g/t bzns.

Options for accommodation are pretty much as follows:

Hostels

X-Base

Nomads

I don't think there's much doubt these are the two nicest hostels in the downtown area. They're certainly the newest. I've never stayed at either, but I've scoped both out (China and I trawled the entire town last year) and my impression is that Nomads is quieter. I've also heard anecdotally that it's slightly nicer. You can get a quad or a sixer for about $30 per person per night at both. Both are equally close to the bus stop, and it's a fifteen minute ride to Kilbirnie.

Sethra has already assembled a party, so if you're in that group, please finalise with her at her post back here.

Motels

747

Will do triples for about $40 pp. Might be worth checking out. The advantage would be that you'd be just across the road. Otoh, it's small, so might be full during the hols.

Any questions, please ask.

Final List:

The Wellington Eight get to sleep in their own beds
The X-Base Six (Carol, Mab, Elaine, Pru, Dewey and Jasmine) are in the Sanctuary at Base
The Sydney Four (Al, Meelie, Sin and Libby) are putting us all to shame at the Museum Hotel
The Ls (Linda, Lee and Lyn) are at the Pixie Palace
The Canadiadians (Claire and Kat) are at the 747
Ange is on a couch in Wilton *lol*
Chris is at her Mum's
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
You like to keep us on our toes, y/y?

I'm 93% sure I do, indeed, know the venue. I will be calling a deaf old man to confirm in the next few days.

With regard to a prior question about whether an all-in-one venue was possible, the answer sadly is no. I *did* look, hard, and there just isn't anywhere that's big enough and cheap enough and open to porn enough, all at the same time.

I will research the accomodation options as soon as I've confirmed the venue; at the moment the same place as last year, or somewhere very similar, is likely the best option.

[identity profile] cross-stitchery.livejournal.com

i don't know if the organisers have started looking for venues, but would it be feasible to look for a place that has space for the out of towners to bunk down for the weekend, rather than fork out for hotel rooms? preferably somewhere that supplies mattresses :)

[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Right then.

Following general consensus I'm thinking...

Standard Wellington Fangirl Friday. Which is dinner at the Oaks (cheap and cheerful) and then cake/coffee at Olive. Possibly 8pm to start? I'll do last minute confirmations by text -- I have 90% of the numbers, and we'll assemble the rest.

Location Location Location

1) Nomads Capital -- 118 Wakefield Street, Wellington

There are two rooms booked here, under "Victoria". Just bowl up, and ask at the desk. Mab you seem to be arriving first, so perhaps you could 'acquire' your room, and the Ls etc can grab the second one when they get in at 7.

2) Thistle Hall -- corner Cuba and Arthur Streets

Just round the corner and up the street. China and I will be setting up from 10 to 10.30 Saturday morning; feel free to arrive at 10.30 like princesses, or before that if you want to mill around. ;-p
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Following initial discussion of preferences a couple of weeks ago, I went ahead and booked two Quad rooms at Nomads. [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick helpfully reminded me of this this afternoon so I just want to verify number of nights required and people involved. If it's wrong it's easily fixed, but I need to know pretty quickly. If anyone's a late joiner I need to know that too so I can add you.

Room One:

[livejournal.com profile] kiwisue
[livejournal.com profile] mab_browne
[livejournal.com profile] cross_stitchery
[livejournal.com profile] sethra2000
[livejournal.com profile] angel_a

Room Two:

[livejournal.com profile] shihadchick
[livejournal.com profile] blademistress
[livejournal.com profile] stickmarionette
[livejournal.com profile] blue_raven

Rooms are booked Friday and Saturday nights, with an option to add Sunday night for those that require it.

g/t 2008

[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Right then.

First official post of the 2008 season.

Dates: Main event Sat 4th and Sun 5th October. Welcome dinner, gossip, vids etc Fri 3rd for those who have already arrived.

Accommodation: Nomads Capital. It's a very nice, very new, hostel smack in the centre of down-town Wellington. What we hope to do, ideally, is put together groups and book the rooms so noone gets accidentally left off like happened last year. Prices are $31 per person for an Ensuite Quad, $23 for a ten bed dorm, and various combos in between. I can poll to see which options you favour when we get a stronger idea of numbers.

Venue: At the moment we are strongly leaning towards the Arts Centre, which is also smack centre of town. Location location. This is to be confirmed with the worst secretary in the world (TM).

Costs: To be confirmed when venue is confirmed, but looking very reasonable. Self catered this year, so basic venue and admin costs only.

Attendance: Confirmed -- [livejournal.com profile] arysteia, [livejournal.com profile] china_shop, [livejournal.com profile] morebliss, [livejournal.com profile] woolly_socks, [livejournal.com profile] kiwisue, [livejournal.com profile] cross_stitchery, [livejournal.com profile] mab_browne, [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick, [livejournal.com profile] blademistress, [livejournal.com profile] stickmarionette, [livejournal.com profile] sethra2000, [livejournal.com profile] aworldinside, [livejournal.com profile] blue_raven, [livejournal.com profile] angel_a.

Official Forms: Will be posted soon. Bwah.

Contributors: [livejournal.com profile] arysteia = 1) Doctor Who in 15 Minutes, 2) Doctor/Master -- Clex for Clever People, 3) Smallville Update -- Renaissance/Requiem 3 for the Fandom that Will Not Die; [livejournal.com profile] china_shop = 1) Slash Pictionary, 2) Due South part deux, 3) Flashpoint; [livejournal.com profile] morebliss = Torchwood; [livejournal.com profile] cross_stitchery = Sentinel; [livejournal.com profile] blademistress = Nip/Tuck (sans gore); [livejournal.com profile] stickmarionette = Update of Soccer RPS.

I think that's it for now. COME! The power of slash compels you!
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
As you've all heard by now in fits and starts, Lex Luthor has departed Smallville for Metropolis my friend A has finally conceded he's moving permanently to the UK, and Stately Luthor Manor has been boarded up and dust sheeted sold for a princely sum such as none of us shall ever see in our life times. [/small emo tear]

The show must, shall, and does go on however, and get/together 2007 will take place, as promised, the weekend of 28-30th September. The only real change, and one which is sadly unavoidable, is that the slumber party style the Manor made possible is no longer an option. China, Vaud and I have investigated all possibilities however, and believe we have come up with the best alternative.

China has very graciously agreed to host the festivities, by which I mean make available her home here in Wellington for daytime and evening activities (the panels, the presentations, the games, the viewing etc). She has a large open plan living space, and a smaller room for breakout time. Between us Vaud and I will be able to take care of the mod cons and technology so all will proceed exactly as usual as far as the actual content of the weekend goes. China cannot, however, accomodate or fully cater for people the way that I used to.

With regard to accomodation, we are looking at a group room at the Cambridge (in Cambridge Terrace, surprise!), which will enable the band to stay largely together, which I imagine would be most enjoyable. Sort of like the convention room parties of old. They are available for six or for ten, at a rate of twenty dollars per person per night, which is very reasonable. I know some of you have family in Wellington you can stay with, though of course you're very welcome to join the mob if you prefer. Those of you coming in from Sydney for the holidays who have already made arrangements are, of course, already arranged. I will require numbers from Kiwis sooner rather than later though, so we can confirm the current provisional booking.

With regard to food, we will be making a small charge to provide lunch both days and the usual snacks and drinks. We will have the usual dinner out, and order takeaways the other nights.

I realise this makes the weekend a little more expensive than in the past, but it will still be fantastic, and I hope as many of you as possible will still come. Please do get your thinking caps on and get back to me asap though.

Tentative programme to follow shortly. Though not tonight. ;-p
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Yeehah.

I was going to say something very rude about lj and how it's eating comments, but then I remembered my joy at being back and thought I'd better not tempt fate. Sorry, good buddy.

So.

With regard to the weather...

I tend to view weather forecasts with a great deal of skepticism. It really hasn't been that cold. Though there have been a couple of spectacular rainstorms. I've been wearing a t-shirt all week, and apart from the one time I froze in driving rain at the bus stop, I've been comfortable. Note that I am *not* telling you not to bring jerseys and jackets. I'm just saying it's not Antarctica. And the thermostat inside my house said it was 25 degrees yesterday afternoon. That's internal, not external, temperature, but still.

Gear wise...

Aussies, I'm making up the spare beds for you. You told me you don't mind sharing, and I've taken you at your word. So no equipment required other than what you need for the road trip?

Aucklanders, chances are I have enough blankets to make up the couches as well. But if you want to bring a sleeping bag that'd be cool.

I certainly have enough towels etc for everyone.

Foodwise, china and I are shopping this afternoon, including gluten free spaghetti etc as required. I'm not sure whether to assume you'll be smuggling in cheap plonk a la sinpozium?

Address. I'll email it out this afternoon, and text sethra who'll be on the road. It's an easy bus ride from the Railway Station for those of you coming by bus and train, and a short taxi ride from the airport. There should be no difficulty.

I think that's it for now. No doubt I will remember something else as soon as I hit send.

Ah. Just did.

We think we'll start at 9am on Saturday. Nothing like getting up bright and early and getting into the swing of things. Obviously if you're at the Rail at the crack of dawn, have a coffee then get the first bus up, don't malinger longer than you have to.

Right. Now I do think that's all.
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
We have our own community. I have informed my loved ones that they have to get out of the house Nov 26/27th. You all appear to be coming. Or trying. This thing is definitely happening now. Resistance is futile.

I'm going to make a call and say that we're going ahead with those dates, since most people said yes, a couple said maybe, and noone said no to it as a possibility. I now need you all to make a call about which day if any you want to include as a third - the Monday or the Friday. It would seem sensible, especially if you're flying in.

I've just had a quick look at the Air New Zealand website, and boy, time difference is a lot more annoying Sydney-Wellington than Wellington-Sydney. Ooh! I've just checked Qantas, and they're considerably cheaper. Bah humbug AirNZ!!! Anyway. If you took Friday off you could get in here in the early afternoon, see a bit of the town, we could all go for dinner and drinks, have an orientation etc, slash away merrily all weekend, and you could fly out crack of dawn Monday and still make it to work on time! (Sadly there are no Sunday night flights. Meh.) But have a look and talk among yourselves, guys.

In the interests of keeping costs down, and also upping the whole slumber party quality, I'm hereby extending an invitation to all the Aussies to bring a sleeping bag and crash at Stately Luthor Manor1. You all seem to know each other pretty well, and it'll be fun. If you'd prefer a hotel room, I can, of course, recommend one.

So. Please join this community, investigate your bookings, and let's start talking turkey. Yaye!!!
