Sorry about the photobucket usage, but I can't be bothered to renew my paid account. Ignore the weird account name; it was an account I created for someone else a few years ago and still had the password.

If photobucket won't load for you let me know and I'll email you a copy.

Right then.

Following general consensus I'm thinking...

Standard Wellington Fangirl Friday. Which is dinner at the Oaks (cheap and cheerful) and then cake/coffee at Olive. Possibly 8pm to start? I'll do last minute confirmations by text -- I have 90% of the numbers, and we'll assemble the rest.

Location Location Location

1) Nomads Capital -- 118 Wakefield Street, Wellington

There are two rooms booked here, under "Victoria". Just bowl up, and ask at the desk. Mab you seem to be arriving first, so perhaps you could 'acquire' your room, and the Ls etc can grab the second one when they get in at 7.

2) Thistle Hall -- corner Cuba and Arthur Streets

Just round the corner and up the street. China and I will be setting up from 10 to 10.30 Saturday morning; feel free to arrive at 10.30 like princesses, or before that if you want to mill around. ;-p

Hey you guuuuys! We're at T-minus-two. Or three. Depends when you're all arriving, and that's what I'm here to ask. Who's getting here when? Do we want to coordinate a Friday night thing? Raise your hand!

Also just a couple of small reminders:

- $20 from each of you to cover the cost of the room and a few snacks, please. Payable to yours truly on Saturday morning.
- if you want to pimp your fandom or run an informal discussion (do eet! let's talk about writing, baby!), go comment on [livejournal.com profile] arysteia's post here.

So soon! So soon! So soon! \o/
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Hey all.

We're in countdown phase now, yippee. In that vein, I'd like to confirm the guest contributors, length of time for their presentations, and equipment/tech support required. This will in theory allow China and I to finalise the timetable.

So. This list is the people who submitted papers volunteered to present. I know there have been some changes, and I've endeavoured to keep up with those, but I'm unsure in a couple of places.

Can you please confirm by comment 1) The title of your presentation; 2) a wee blurb/witty oneliner for the programme; 3) format (powerpoint, clipvid etc, I just want to make sure I have all necessary programs on the Designated Laptop); 4) rough guess at length (noone will play music to get you off the stage!)

[livejournal.com profile] arysteia

1) Doctor Who in 15 Minutes -- Forty Five Years of Canon, Massively Compressed
2) Doctor/Master -- Clex for Clever People
3) Inevitable Smallville Update -- Renaissance/Requiem 3 for the Fandom that Will Not Die

[livejournal.com profile] china_shop

1) Slash Pictionary
2) Due South part deux
3) Flashpoint [a general show pimp?]

[livejournal.com profile] morebliss

Torchwood -- [I'm unsure S, is this a general show pimp or a ship manifesto for Janto?]

[livejournal.com profile] blademistress

Nip/Tuck -- [Likewise L, is this a general show pimp or a ship manifesto for Sean/Christian?]

[livejournal.com profile] stickmarionette

1) Soccer RPS redux
2) Discussion -- RPS and the Media

[livejournal.com profile] cross_stitchery

The Sentinel [Pimp? Manifesto? Both?]

[livejournal.com profile] kiwisue

The Professionals -- Kickin' it Old Skool

If you still want to toss your hat into the ring, it's not too late! Just let me know asap, and get cracking!

Other than that... If you can bring your presentation on a flash drive and transfer it to the Designated Laptop in the morning, I think that will greatly facilitate the smooth running of this submarine. I want to leave the DL permanently hooked up, and not switch unless we absolutely have to.

Ooh, and. Last call for vids, I'm finalising the show. Anything awesome come out in your fandom in the last month? Hit me.

Registration Form 2008

I need to broaden my horizons....Help!!

Please be gentle with me... )
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Preferred first name: Victoria

My primary fandom: Doctor Who is slugging it out with Supernatural

My secondary fandom: Stargate: Atlantis has dropped back (to the point where I just looked confused when [livejournal.com profile] china_shop apologised for my bereavement). And crazily, Smallville is making a very strong, very fast comeback. Again. How 'bout that???

Other fandoms: The Professionals. Torchwood.

OTP forever: Lex/Clark. Doctor/Master. Sam/Dean.

OTP sometimes: Bodie/Doyle. Sheppard/McKay. Jack/Ianto.

My definition of slash is: Two hot guys doing hot things to each other. What's funny to me is that sometimes they're *not* objectively hot until that wee / appears, and then poof! Magic. Suddenly they are. The mega hotness of one converts the other in my eyes. And the power of their affection does the rest. [I'm fully aware I've left femslash out. It's not an accident. I've never read it, never thought about it. Interestingly (to me anyway), that's not a sexual preference so much as a commentary on the dearth of good (or any!) female characters in shows I watch. Because I *do* read gender swap femslash for my OTPs, and that's just silly.]

I like slash because: It makes bad shows better and good shows awesome. No seriously. Good fanfic anyway distils and crystallises what you love about a show, filling in gaps and explaining glitches. Slash just goes one better by focusing on the relationships you love, the character dynamics you enjoy... Oh, and the hot. I also like the emotional content. It's my favourite driver in a show anyway, more so than the action, so a fic that's heavily based around that is win win for me.

I discovered slash by: Print zine belonging to older sister at friend's house. Mention in Complete History of Trek (very negative of course!). Link on fan site for Robin of Sherwood. Game over.

My bullet proof kink: Dominant personality/control freak bottoming.

My major league squick: The Healing Power of the Cock. Damn you! It does not fix rape trauma *or* madness!!! Or evil, come to that. Though sometimes I let that one go, *g*.

My guilty pleasure: Mpreg. Yes. I know. Put down those vegetables. I justify myself to noone.

I first found out about (my first) g/t from/by: Bwahahaha. [livejournal.com profile] china_shop and I invented it, yo. But I *can* tell an origin story. I went to a barbecue at china's. She said casually, "Oh hey, there's a slash con in Sydney. We should go." I don't think she was particularly serious. "We should totally go," I replied. I don't think *I* was particularly serious. "Okay," she countered. "Okay," I agreed. And suddenly we *were* serious. And then I was *terrified* on the plane. And we agreed that she'd be the goofy one and I'd be the cool one. But then everyone we met was awesome. And I was cool for about an hour till I lost all dignity shrieking "Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!1!" in the auction for an original Theban Band manip of Clark and Lex. Meh. The goofy have more fun. And we liked the Tight Five (aka the EHoF) so much we told them to come to NZ and we'd do it all again. And they did. And we did. And thus g/t was born.
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Wow. This is late. Really late. Later than ever before. I solace myself with the fact you've all been before, and in fact, at this point, I feel I've known most of you forever. We only have two n00bs first timers, and hey, we've been to about a million Armageddons together [livejournal.com profile] angel_a, or eaten cake, chatted loudly, and embarrassed the mundanes innocent fellow patrons several times [livejournal.com profile] aworldinside, so I call that a win.

Anyway. Work to do.

Please fill out a Registration Form. As you all know, I grade these very harshly using my finely honed NCEA skills. Technically that means text language is allowed in Maths and Physics... Hmmmm... What next? Macros? Wai halo thar evol ex-bf! But not in Classics! Except... Um... I let the boys include Superman cartoons... And the odd thinly veiled gay sex joke... Yeah. Carry on.

You know the drill. Please cut and paste this into a comm post of your own (remember to post to the comm, not your own lj, *vbg*). Feel free to flock as preferred.

Oh, and remember. No cheating. Consider this a Rorschach test for any changes since last year, and complete it anew. *Then* you can look back if you want. You may or may not have noticed (and probably haven't if you use style-mine) but I have redesigned the comm. Most importantly I switched from S1 to S2, which means we now have tags. It's still a slight WIP, but I've painstakingly (Worship Me!) gone back and tagged everything so you should be able to find anything you like pretty easily now. Myself, I plan on doing something funny at g/t this year with all the data I've collected over the years. Mwahahahaha!

Oh. ETA: Try to be discriminating. Don't have ten primary fandoms, it's not allowed. [/school marm] Make a hard call, and put the rest in "other".

ETA2: Mofos! What is this, the Third Reich? I tried to post this from work today and got kicked off the internet. For a DDR rating of fifteen. Yes, fifteen. (I've no idea what DDR stands for either, but evidently it separates the evil doers from those who actually use the internet to do serious work.) Ordinarily it takes at least two hundred to get disabled, so it would appear there's a crackdown on... So, without further ado, later than ever...

Following initial discussion of preferences a couple of weeks ago, I went ahead and booked two Quad rooms at Nomads. [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick helpfully reminded me of this this afternoon so I just want to verify number of nights required and people involved. If it's wrong it's easily fixed, but I need to know pretty quickly. If anyone's a late joiner I need to know that too so I can add you.

Room One:

Room Two:

Rooms are booked Friday and Saturday nights, with an option to add Sunday night for those that require it.

Hello dear ones,

This is a call a) to attendees, but also b) to those who can't come but would like to have their names mentioned vicariously (and a tear shed) all the same.

I would like recommendations (and links!) to fanvids for the vid show.

Criteria for 2008:

1) Innovation -- while there's always room for old favourites, I largely *have* most old favourites. Not least the archival disks from g/t's past (thanks [livejournal.com profile] erilyn), but also a substantial collection of my own. I'd really like recs that most of us *haven't* seen a hundred times. That doesn't mean it has to be a new fandom, but a new vid in an old fandom would be preferable to a golden oldie.

2) Format -- please if at all possible avi files are best and easiest. Another plus for newer vids is the death of ram, wmv etc. Yay! But mov still makes my laptop sad. Apparently my new laptop not so much.

3) Fandom -- obviously pimp your own fandom, but if there's anything cool from elsewhere send that too. Multi-fandom vids are always good. I'd like more range, with an emphasis on individual quality rather than the complete oeuvre of one artiste.

4) Content -- slash, gen, humour, anything goes. Got porn cut in? So be it. We're all adults. Though I will warn for any delicate flowers. Less is more, and epic eight minute vids tend to lose people.

Please link me in a comment so I can download the files and assemble all in advance. If there's anything that's *not* generally available on the net that you're in a position to upload somewhere for me, that'd be awesome.

Right then.

First official post of the 2008 season.

Dates: Main event Sat 4th and Sun 5th October. Welcome dinner, gossip, vids etc Fri 3rd for those who have already arrived.

Accommodation: Nomads Capital. It's a very nice, very new, hostel smack in the centre of down-town Wellington. What we hope to do, ideally, is put together groups and book the rooms so noone gets accidentally left off like happened last year. Prices are $31 per person for an Ensuite Quad, $23 for a ten bed dorm, and various combos in between. I can poll to see which options you favour when we get a stronger idea of numbers.

Venue: At the moment we are strongly leaning towards the Arts Centre, which is also smack centre of town. Location location. This is to be confirmed with the worst secretary in the world (TM).

Costs: To be confirmed when venue is confirmed, but looking very reasonable. Self catered this year, so basic venue and admin costs only.

Attendance: Confirmed -- [livejournal.com profile] arysteia, [livejournal.com profile] china_shop, [livejournal.com profile] morebliss, [livejournal.com profile] woolly_socks, [livejournal.com profile] kiwisue, [livejournal.com profile] cross_stitchery, [livejournal.com profile] mab_browne, [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick, [livejournal.com profile] blademistress, [livejournal.com profile] stickmarionette, [livejournal.com profile] sethra2000, [livejournal.com profile] aworldinside, [livejournal.com profile] blue_raven, [livejournal.com profile] angel_a.

Official Forms: Will be posted soon. Bwah.

Contributors: [livejournal.com profile] arysteia = 1) Doctor Who in 15 Minutes, 2) Doctor/Master -- Clex for Clever People, 3) Smallville Update -- Renaissance/Requiem 3 for the Fandom that Will Not Die; [livejournal.com profile] china_shop = 1) Slash Pictionary, 2) Due South part deux, 3) Flashpoint; [livejournal.com profile] morebliss = Torchwood; [livejournal.com profile] cross_stitchery = Sentinel; [livejournal.com profile] blademistress = Nip/Tuck (sans gore); [livejournal.com profile] stickmarionette = Update of Soccer RPS.

All remaining fandoms (including those previously visited) are up for grabs to volunteers. Your contribution can take whatever form you like -- pimp reel, slide show, powerpoint, old skool handouts, ship manifesto, you name it. Go nuts. Also panel moderators and suggestions for discussion please.

I think that's it for now. COME! The power of slash compels you!
[identity profile] arysteia.livejournal.com
Greetings earthlings.

China and I have had preliminary discussions (and two whole meetings! sort of!) about this year. We have at the very least decided upon a date, whereupon you may all begin to plan, or at least envisage possibility.

The weekend we've decided on is the 4th and 5th of October, and as usual starting from the Friday afternoon/night (3rd) for anyone who happens to have blown into town early/live here.

We're exploring options re venues and accommodation at this stage, and will keep you posted.

I'd like to put out a call for papers though. Heh. Sounds like an academic conference. Even so.

Pimps and highlight reels, as always, welcome, but if you ever feel a sudden mad desire to use your editing powers for evil, or to abuse powerpoint, or to hand out questionnaires, let this day be that day!

I, myself, am currently, for your edification, for lols, for Great Justice, because I need practice, etc, editing together the entirety of forty years of Doctor Who canon into fifteen minutes. I consider this a constructive use of school my time. :-D

Take up the challenge! Be all you can be! Go Navy!
