Last Call for Papers...
Sep. 20th, 2009 08:16 amHowdy, one and all.
The weekend is nigh upon us, and it's filling up nicely as far as content goes. We also have our largest ever numbers in terms of participants, so yaye.
China and I will be putting together the timetable very shortly, and there's not a huge amount of space left, but:
1) Does anyone (who hasn't already communicated with me in some way) still want to make a presentation of some kind? By presentation here I mean "fandom/pairing intro", ie "here's my thing that I adore and you should too"; or alternately "show pimp", ie "here's a show you should totally be watching/rewatching"? If so, we could squeeze another couple in.
If anyone's mad keen on any of the newer shows and wants to gain more fans, now's your chance. Leverage? Fringe? IDEK. Or if you're a last bastion of an old show and want to rekindle the embers, still your chance! China and I were chuckling about the fact that SGA, aka the fandom that ate fandom, never got done at g/t. Travesty! Victim of its own popularity! She's also asked me to rectify Supernatural's nigh supernatural absence, and I will be (show, not ship, fear not anti-wincesters). If anyone wants to put together a "reel", ie the very best moments of your show, cut together so they'll play short and sweet... have at.
In either case, please let me know in comments.
2) And then there's panels. We've got a few goodies planned, but for various reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, China and I don't want to listen to the sound of our own voices continually. So, I have a request in three subsets.
2a) You'd like a panel of your own (ie you have a topic, some subquestions, and would be happy to mod/stimulate the discussion)
2b) You have a burning question but just want to throw it out there (ie tell me and I will add it to one of the pre-existing lists)
2c) You would like to volunteer to mod something off the list (ie just guide the convo, topic already on the list)
If any of these sound like you, please let me know in comments.
The (tentative) timetable follows fairly shortly...

[I've got Apollo/Midnighter covered, in any case.]

We're hardly the Kids of Today ourselves, but we'd still be interested.

Date: 2009-09-20 08:45 pm (UTC)warning: major rambling and run-on sentences
Date: 2009-09-20 12:08 pm (UTC)Or it's something I'd need to research and I just don't have the time, like Changes in Slash Fandom's Dominant Writing Styles Over the Decades, because wow, sometimes I get mental whiplash when I read Pros or Trek or Sentinel or Highlander, and it's not just the plots/tropes. There's another topic though - Where Did All The Hurt/Comfort Go? Cause, at least in some fandoms I'm in, you don't get the classic h/c stories like you did in older fandoms.
I don't know...What's the next fandom that will swallow fandom (or at least half of it, while the other half bitches about everyone on their friendlist falling for it)? Is there a Harry Potter on the horizon? Is it likely that one fandom could dominate Fandom to any degree, or are we too spoiled for choice these days?
Possibly controversial - Have you learned anything/had your views changed by major discussions/wank in fandom? I'm particularly thinking of RaceFail (and all the race-related discussions in the last few years), and/or the recent warnings debate, but could be many things. Cause I've sure had my eyes opened on issues through fandom, I admit it. Speaking of race-related issues, Ronon Dex: He's not so "Other" when you're Antipodean?
My brain only seems to want to cough up slight topics which more sound like polling the group than in-depth discussions:
- Fandoms you've been most involved in/read the most in without seeing or reading the source material
- Fandoms you've been most disappointed in the source material after getting into it through fanfic
- Current shows you'd most want to see on-screen crossovers between (like between Law & Order and Homicide:Life on the Streets).
- Who are your Het OTPs?
Ugh, I'm tempted not to post this comment at all, but what the hell, I'll inflict my nonsense on others.
Re: warning: major rambling and run-on sentences
Date: 2009-09-20 09:18 pm (UTC)Boy, tell me about it! Never touched the other two, but these, it's like another language. I'll talk about it with you, even if no one else will. Though... there are enough older vintage fen here that we could probably actually get something going along these lines. Might be nice to include another thing partially targetted at the demographic too (they often miss out, when the shiny reigns supreme). Let's talk about this one?
Cause I've sure had my eyes opened on issues through fandom, I admit it.
Me too. I do admit it. I actually wanted to ask a question about women (given we *are* women, damn it, and we matter!) so I think perhaps with your backing we shall have one serious session, with fair warning, so those who want candy floss can go for a walk and hit the dairy.
All orphan questions added to the list. I'm glad you *did* manage to hit POST. :-D

Date: 2009-09-21 10:17 am (UTC)Or ask my friendlist to rec some stories - the lazy approach to research :D
Are you thinking of focusing on the writing aspect, or on the content too?
This is something I've thought about before, I was reminded because I was flipping through Textual Poachers looking for inspiration for panel topics, and a quote from an old Pros story caught my eye.
