Dates for 2012/Comics Event/Twitter Feed

Hi everyone. Can you believe it's that time of year again?

The dates for get/together this year will be Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October. If you're in a position to take Friday 5th and/or Monday 8th off work, then there'll be the usual Slackers' Lunch and Wind Down type activities, but I'm also exploring having some more structured/focused events too.

Given my current proclivities (and the fact that this is the best year ever for comics movies) I'm looking at hosting a Comics event at my place, for example, probably Friday afternoon and into the evening, before FGF. So if you're interested in that, and can swing it, let me know. Also, as you do figure out when you might be arriving, if you could comment here that'd be great, so we can plan for dinner and any other activities that might be mooted.

Also, naturally, start thinking about any new/old fandoms/pairings you might like to pimp, and any topics for discussion, whether to lead or just throw out for one of the mods to run. I know meelie is looking at doing Teen Wolf this year, so get in early and reserve yours. \o/

Lastly, there is now a twitter account for g/t; it's @get__together (with the two underscores like the comm). I won't be spamming it, but any brief updates and random thoughts will likely go live there first. ETA: Thanks to china_shop there is also an LJ/RSS feed at: gettogethertwit.

Welcome!

Well. Where to start...

First off, let me say, "Have at!" We can be pretty raucous in the sense of having a lot to say and loving to catch up, but we're all pretty nice so there's no need to be shy.

Have a look at the timetable tag on the comm, if you want to see what we've done in past years: http://get--together.livejournal.com/tag/timetables -- that should give you an idea of the sort of thing we get up to.

If that sounds like fun (it is, I promise!) then come along. Basically at some point nearer the time I will ask for subs, which are usually about $30 and need to be direct credited to me, and at that point you can fill out a registration form, which is basically just a gtky so we know what fandoms you're in, what snacks you like, and other matters of grave importance.

Then decide when you want to come down to Wellington and how -- that's up to you -- and what you need in the way of accommodation. dewey3067 usually makes a group booking at a hotel across the road from the venue, so you'd be welcome to get in on that if it suits, or you can make your own arrangements.

You can then be either a presenter or an observer, as active or as passive as you choose. There are people who've come for eight years and never presented anything, and others who presented in their first year, aged seventeen. Whatever your comfort level is.

I'd definitely be in on the group booking thing as I'll probably come alone, though I'm hoping to convince at least one other person to be in on it too (although she's from Nelson way). I'll try and take the extra days off work so I can come for the whole weekend, but I'm also likely to drive down as I have no idea about what happens at the airport otherwise (can you tell I did a big OE for six years twenty years ago, but my domestic flying experience is close to NIL?), and I feel safer knowing I have my own transport. I'd also be willing to have passengers or share driving and petrol costs if anyone else is thinking about coming from this part of the country.

I think I'd be happy to just observe first time around, but if it's as fun as it sounds (I'm sure it is) and once I've experienced that, I'll probably come out of my shell in future years.

I'm 97% sure there's a courtesy shuttle from the hotel to the airport and back, fwiw. Watch the accommodation posts as they eventuate.

I've actually booked flights now - instead of the driving idea - so I'm definitely in, looking at staying three nights so hopefully that will work in with whatever is being organised accommodation-wise.

Also, I arrive VERY early Friday and leave late afternoon Monday, so any idea on what to do until things begin would be most welcome. Oh, and how the shuttle works, etc.

Sounds like we have similar schedules - what city are you coming from? I'm Dunedin.

Ran into a snag with our hotel from last year - completely overbooked. So I am investigating group- options that don't cost a fortune and we may have to resort to a hostel in the city again. /o\ But I will make a separate post when I have the options and the breakdown - hopefully later today or tomorrow at latest.

I'll note you as a "likely" for the hotel group booking. When it gets closer we'll get more exact numbers/days. ( I like the way arysteia says I always do this - last year was first !)
