Registration Form 2011

Preferred first name: Victoria

I have a different handle at DW/AO3: nope, arysteia everywhere

Reader/Writer/Vidder/All of the Above: reader/writer

My current primary fandom: Marvel Comics/Marvel Cinematic Universe

My current secondary fandom(s): DCU (poor baby)

Fandom(s) I’ve broken up with: Supernatural (Godstiel could compel me to worship him, but not to keep reading)

Fandom(s) I just can’t quit: Smallville, related DCU

OTP forever: Steve/Tony, Thor/Loki (Avengers); Erik/Charles (X-Men)

OTP sometimes: Clark/Lex, Clark/Bruce, Bruce/Dick

OTP never, baby! I'm OT3/OTTeam/OT? all the way: I'm feeling the oddest compulsion to write Bruce Wayne having an affair with Tony Stark, but I don't think I could bear Steve Rogers' woobie face. Lex Luthor, on the other hand, would laugh and laugh and laugh, and then kick Clark Kent some more with his kryptonite shoes.

My bullet proof kink: control freaks bottoming

My major league squick: partner betrayal, unwarned for threesomes (not cool!)

My guilty pleasure: mpreg (yes, I said it, and… I may be doing the mpreg big bang…)

My comment on slash is: I miss the days where there had to actually be some subtext before a fandom sprang up like a plague of locusts

My comment on fandom more generally is: Kids today got no respect! Get off my lawn! But my curmudgeonly ways don't make me love it less.

Coke/Coke Zero/Diet Coke/Sprite/Juice: coke zero

Tea/Coffee: tea

Blue Top/Calci-Trim Milk: calci-trim

I will likely come for dinner Friday: yes

I will likely come for dinner Saturday: yes

I will likely come for dinner Sunday: yes

The country is obsessed with All Blacks injuries, I am trying to write infinite Big Bangs whilst avoiding new fandoms -- [livejournal.com profile] china_shop jinxed me by betting I couldn't make it to November, and she was right D: D: D: -- and it's just about six weeks to lift-off, so you know what that means… It's time for registrations. I've edited and updated the old form a bit, so if you're coming please fill it out. As always, feel free to flock your post to the comm if you prefer.

Costs

Subs for 2011 are thirty dollars. This covers hireage of the hall, hot and cold drinks, snacks, the dread but necessary toilet paper and tissues, and any incidentals. I'll make a post in about three weeks (ie three weeks from d-day) with details for how to pay.

Group Dinners

We're basically looking at the same three options as always. Friday Night Fangirls at the Oaks followed by cake at Olive as is the custom of the land, then Indian and Thai in Kilbirnie Saturday and Sunday. Apologies for the lack of variety, but the convoy into town would be more difficult that it was worth. The only question, then, is which way round. My feeling is that it works better Indian Saturday then Thai Sunday as many more people attend the Saturday dinner, and the staff there are a) willing to let ravening hordes order off the menu rather than impose a set menu, and b) seemingly more amused by our shenanigans. If you feel you would strongly prefer the other way, please indicate it and democracy will speak. Both restaurants have a decent vegetarian selection. FNF is a bit more casual, though an indication of numbers would be good; Saturday and Sunday will require a proper booking, though you will have a chance after this to change/confirm.

I've no doubt forgotten something, but that's all I can think of for now.

Oh! If you've had a sudden brainwave and would like to make a presentation of some sort, or have an idea for discussion, please comment on the Calls for Papers post.

What a fantastic response to the Awesome Ladies booty call. You rock mightily yourselves, ladies!

So then. It's comparatively early days yet, but it's never too early to start hatching plots. So start thinking about any other presentations you might like to make. No commitment required now, but if you've got an idea you'd like to call dibs on, do it here, and avoid the rush. Also, if you have a suggestion you'd quite like someone else to take on (no guarantees) add that to the list too.

Basically there are a few categories here (no hard and fast rules):

1) Show Pimps -- is there an awesome new show (or a magnificent old one) that everyone should be watching? Let us know! Put together a few clips, or a basic primer (powerpoint, picspam etc) to advertise and convert the masses. [This includes media other than tv shows, natch.]

2) Ship Manifestos -- is there an OTP (or OT3 or...) that is oppressing fandom fairly leaping off the screen? Do likewise.

3) Panel Discussions -- everything you wanted to know and were afraid to ask. (You don't have to moderate, though you can if you'd like. Just chuck your questions down.)

Here's one I made earlier... presentations past (alphabetical, not chronological) )

Current Offers:

[livejournal.com profile] arysteia -- Marvel Comics (The X-Men)
[livejournal.com profile] arysteia -- The New MCU (The Avengers)

Highlander -- China and I were talking about how odd it was no one's ever done such a classic fandom (for which several of you have worn the t-shirt to g/t!). Any old school fans want to cross this one off the list at last?

Re accommodation: [livejournal.com profile] dewey3067 has done a great job organising rooms at the Brentwood, which apparently are moving fairly fast, as predicted. The full details of the current group booking, including pricing etc, are in the last comment on that post, which will be edited to reflect current status. Go check it out, and confirm your details as appropriate. If you need to add yourself, please move quickly.

Hi Guys! Just thought I'd pop in to let any Sydney peeps know that Air New Zealand has sale fares to Wellington on at the moment.

::has bought her tickets!::

A formal call for volunteers/pimps/presentations etc will go out in the not-distant future, but since THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN has closed the school I'm seizing the moment to kick off an idea I've been mulling over.

Inspired in part by the success of these two categories in the Vid Oscars last year, and in part by [livejournal.com profile] morebliss's and my Epic Rewatches of Doom of the X-Files and SG-1, I want to see if we can put together a themed tag-team presentation in an area(s) that typically are under-represented. To be blunt, g/t is a sausage fest, and a pretty white one at that. And that's fine, because we're there to celebrate what we love, when we love it most. No harm, no foul, no criticism, no pressure.

BUT.

Watching 200 hours of X-Files in a fortnight reminded me intensely of how very, very much I was in love with Dana Scully when I was nineteen/twenty, lo these many years ago. And how sad I was that she'd never get her day in the sun/on the projector. And then I thought about my other big girl-crush, Lois Lane, and how outrageous it is that that big dumb alien Clark Kent gets all the airtime (not least from me) and so on.

SO.

I would LOVE to see a loosely connected set of segments on awesome women of fandom who otherwise never get their day. Is there someone that YOU love? [livejournal.com profile] alasen, what about Xena? [livejournal.com profile] vaudevilles, still feeling the Starbuck? [livejournal.com profile] labellementeuse, did Nikita live up to expectation? Or tell us why Batgirl was the best comic of 2011 (and Dan Didio should DIAF). Anyone and everyone else??? Just five or so minutes each, to encapsulate the Awesome, be it a couple of clips of key moments, or a songvid that sums her up, and/or a tiny summary of why you love her.

I see a secondary opportunity here too, in that it might coax those of you who are traditionally too reticent to present, or too busy to put together a whole Thing, into playing. Join me!

And then I thought, huh, we should also do non-white characters who never get their moment either. So if there's a character of colour who you love, please wow us with a tiny tribute to them.

Who's with me? Comment here to either volunteer or suggest characters. (But seriously, volunteer! Five minutes!)

A perennial bugbear, it remains a regret we don't have an all-in-one space like the [livejournal.com profile] sinpozium venue in Sydney, but we do what we can.

Hotel Option:

If you move quickly, and you're willing/able to splash out a little more this year, I heartily recommend the Brentwood. (I've never actually stayed there, before anyone makes me sign in blood, but I have been to functions and enjoyed them.) Do twins and triples, but in each case you can pack in an extra person (ie triple and quad) if two of you are willing to share a queen bed. About $50-80 pp depending on combos and packing. Big advantage: literally across the road and down a wee lane from the venue. Also, free pick-up from airport, so save on taxis.

The Brentwood

Otherwise, there are the old reliables offered every year: )

Feel free to use the comments on this post to discuss options/organise roommates. And of course to ask any accommodation related questions. :D

ETA: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dewey3067 for organising and booking the hotel rooms. Check out full details in comments.

Right, sorry for the hold up on this -- further delayed by lj shenanigans -- but we managed to get dates confirmed at last. As hinted earlier, and as endorsed by unscientific polling, we're going for the first weekend of November (ie exactly one month later than usual).

That is to say, get/together 2011 will take place Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 November. Since it's term time rather than holidays I'll have to check the almanac to confirm what time I can take off Friday and/or Monday, but given I'm only teaching seniors this year, odds are it's a decent part of both days. Lord knows, I have no problem going from chapel to fandom lunch to class and back again. ;-p

ETA: Venue remains the same as the last two years -- Park Bowling Club in Kilbirnie.

ETA2: Formal registrations will open in about six weeks, but in the interests of planning and working out costs (ideally similar to last year) it'd be cool if you could indicate likely attendance in comments here.

I've been mulling this over for a while, but Dewey very efficiently brought it back to my and China's attention today, namely that our general date-vicinity is smack dab in the middle of plastic waka festival 2011.

I haven't done the full due diligence but my gut feeling is 1) acommodation/flights will be hard to come by, and 2) what there is will be expensive. Dates may have to shift this year.

So that China and I have all relevant information before we do complicated quantum physics, can you please comment here (comments are screened in case you say anything identifying) with said relevant information.

Relevant information would include:

I am a student and I go to X university and have exams Y

I am an Australian and going to Sinpoz but I'd totally come to g/t if it was Z

My fandom has vitally important concert Q

or anything else similar. No guarantees of course, but best efforts as always.
